It was another weekend, and the weather was great, with no chance of rain. Marinette Dupain-Cheng was watching her friend’s band Kitty Section play on the Couffaine’s houseboat. Adrien Agreste’s father seemed to be giving him more freedom because he was playing the keyboard with the band. Which up until now wasn’t a regular occurrence. Not that she was in any state of mind to confess her feelings for him, especially when she felt this confused since Marinette had started feeling the same about Cat Noir.
After Chloé Bourgeois became penalty and threw away her friendship with Sabrina Raincomprix over a soccer game, started to Marinette try to include her with their friend group since she could tell how upset she had been. She had once been friendless and wouldn’t wish that on anyone. It was a very lonely feeling. So, she wanted to try, plus she thought that Sabrina was a good person and just needed to be able to show it.
Everyone in the friend group was very inviting. This is the first time that Sabrina showed up to band practice, and lucky for her, Marinette brought extra earplugs just in case.
On the dockside of the houseboat, there was Zoé Lee, and Kagami Tsurugi, who had recently started becoming really close, then sitting together was Alya Césaire and Nino Lahiffe after that was Mylène Haprèle who was happily watching her boyfriend Ivan Bruel who was the drummer. Then on the waterside of the houseboat was Sabrina, then her. She was right in front of Adrien, trying super hard not to only stare at him the whole time, especially considering that Luka was right there.
Sabrina seemed lost entirely. It was like she didn’t know what to do with herself or how to have fun. This wasn’t all that surprising, considering that she was used to just following Chloé around and basically be her servant. So, Marinette just hoped that Sabrina would be able to let loose and start genuinely enjoying herself.
As the band played, she noticed that Sabrina kept stealing glances at Luka, all while blushing. It was a lot how she acted while they were in New York. However, Luka didn’t seem to notice as he was much more into his guitar. Marinette glanced around to see if anyone else noticed. They weren’t, as they were all wrapped up in the band or their other halves. So, she pulled her phone out of her purse before scrolling to the girl’s group chat. The group chat didn’t include Sabrina yet, which was good for her since she wanted to play matchmaker.
Alix Kubdel, who wasn’t into watching Kitty Section play and therefore not there, was the first to reply, probably because she was the only one who could currently hear her phone. Happily, Alix was all in and said she wanted to make this happen. Alya replied that she thought that they would be cute together. Mylène said the same, then Zoé sent a few heart emojis before saying she was in. While Kagami didn’t reply at all, she just side glanced at her before lacing her fingers through Zoé’s. Now, she would have to wait until the band took a break for Juleka and Rose’s response.
Once the music stopped, Alya motioned to the two girls in the band to check their phones, which they promptly did. Rose sent back a thumbs-up emoji while Juleka looked worried and didn’t respond to the text. Marinette knew that Juleka did want her brother to be loved and in a relationship, so hopefully, Juleka would come around. Through the group chat, those who were responsive to the matchmaking suggested getting Luka and Sabrina to chat during the next break since the band had been starting back up again. The watchers and Marinette popped back in their earplugs as the music began. This time Kitty Section was practicing one of their new songs. This was one that Ivan and Juleka had just finished writing.
Once their new song finished, a piece Marinette liked better than their last, she got up and motioned to Sabrina to follow.
“Since you know almost everyone here, I wanted to introduce you to Juleka’s brother Luka. Since I believe he is the only one you don’t know here,” She said. “So, Luka, this is Sabrina. Sabrina, this is Luka.”
“Nice to meet you,” Sabrina stuttered.
“Pleasure to make your acquaintance.” Luka replied to Sabrina, whose’s face had gotten as red as her hair.
Marinette threw her arm around the shorter girl as they continued to make small talk, with her only jumping in when the conversation needed moving. It seemed like at least Luka seemed to enjoy Sabrina’s company. Marinette just couldn’t tell if he was interested in her or not. She did know that she wouldn’t be the best person to ask him. Maybe she could get Rose or Juleka to ask.
Her next idea was double dating. She was hoping that she could get Rose or Juleka, or possibly Ivan or Mylene would agree to do it. She would have to ponder since it might be too earlier for this step.
Over the last month, Sabrina would join the group about twice a week on the houseboat. Sometimes Luka and Juleka’s mother, Anarka Couffaine, showing up, and others, the twin’s father, Jagged Stone, popping up. Which was fun for them to explain to Sabrina. During this time, Marinette was encouraging Sabrina to get to know Luka, and Luka seemed to enjoy being around her.
However, she couldn’t get Juleka to ever ask if he could like Sabrina since all she would say was that she knew her brother. No one knew what that meant, but they just went with it.
As soon as she said matchmaking, Zoe was all in, which made sense because of how similar the two of them were. Marinette even felt like Zoe was as personally invested as she was.
For Marinette, she felt like this was the perfect time to focus on a matchmaking goal. She needed something to distract her. She needed a distraction from her conflicting feelings, the fact that Monarch stole all the miraculous, and the fact that she shouldn’t pursue a relationship herself. Unlike how she was feeling, she just wanted everyone to feel good and be happy. Truthfully, she loved both Adrien and Cat Noir, and she didn’t deserve it back. So, right now, matchmaking was one of the only things that made her happy. So, even though she couldn’t be satisfied, she would make everyone else happy.
One Kitty Section finished playing another new love song that both Adrien and Luka wrote when she popped over to where Rose and Juleka were.
“So, did you change your mind about Sabrina yet?” Marinette asked Juleka.
“I just want this to happen,” Zoe came up, joining the conversation.
Rose giggled, wrapping her arms around her tall girlfriend.
Juleka mumbled something.
“That makes sense,” Rose replied.
“At least we know that you think it is possible,” Zoe said.
“I could see why you need more time,” Marinette said.
The four talked quickly about at least the idea of Juleka’s twin with Chloe’s former best friend. The brainstorming didn’t come up with much as both Juleka and Rose had to go back and join the band for more practice. However, she and Zoe continued to text about it. At the end of the text, it was decided that a small group might be better and something casual. Marinette thought a juice shop would be perfect.
Juleka wanted to see up close how she felt about this situation, so she and Rose would go. Rose was the one who invited both Luka and Sabrina. While Marinette had never seen Sabrina look as happy as she did at that moment. She hoped this was a good sign for the hopeful future couple.
The following Monday at school, Rose rushed up to her while she was with Alya and Zoe.
“The group setting went well!” Rose exclaimed.
Juleka mumbled.
“That makes a lot of sense,” Alya replied.
“That is something to worry about. Do you think he is over you, Marinette?” Zoe asked her.
“I don’t know,” she admitted feeling a bit guilty about it.
“What do you think we should do?” Zoe questioned.
“I think we should keep doing outings with them. Hopefully, that way, we can see for ourselves, and either way, it should bring the two of them closer,” Alya explained.
“Let’s plan the next one!” Rose said happily.
The girls got Ivan to agree to one at the Louvre. At the same time, Zoe got Kagami to agree to do one at the ice rink, Alya and Nino for some DJing event, and a group event at the movies. They hoped it wouldn’t be obvious what they were doing, or at least not evident to Luka or Sabrina.
It was a Tuesday on the Liberty when Luka approached her.
“Hey Marinette, can we talk?”
“Sure, what about Luka?” She asked.
“Look, I talked with my sister and wanted to let you know that you don’t have to worry.” He said.
“What do you mean?”
“I know you want us to be friends, and you were worried that I might still have feelings for you, but I only feel friendly towards you.” He explained.
“Oh.”
After a moment, she decided just to ask.
“So, do you like anyone new,” hoping for a yes.
Luka gave her a knowing look. “Marinette, if there is one thing you are not, it is subtle.”
“What do you mean?” She asked.
He gave her the same look as before, “Sabrina.”
“Oh.”
“You know I care about you, right?” He asked.
“Of course. Why?”
“I can tell you are trying to busy yourself trying to make everyone else happy, so you don’t have to deal with your own happiness.” He explained to her. “I’m not the only one who has noticed that you aren’t as happy as you have been putting on, and you deserve to be happy too. I want you to be happy.”
“I’m not unhappy,” she argued weakly, knowing he had been right.
“Marinette,” he said with his look that told her he knew.
All she could do was sigh.
“Why haven’t you talked to Adrien lately?” Luka questioned her.
“I talked to him today at school,” she replied.
“You know that wasn’t what I meant,” he said.
“I know,” she said, releasing a deep breath.
“So, why not?”
“I’m just dealing with a lot lately,” she said, not wanting to tell him that she was not only in love with Adrien but also with Cat Noir, and that made her feel like a bad person.
“Well, whatever you are dealing with, you know I am here for you, and whatever it is, you won’t have to deal with it forever.”
Thanks, Luka, that made me feel better,” she smiled.
A few days later, she got to witness Luka ask out Sabrina, and she hoped that she didn’t have to deal with her own emotions at the moment. At least right now, she could be happy for both Luka and Sabrina.
