The Price of Lives
Tiffany October 13, 2020 Activism (10) Comments

In a way, this is can be called a followed up to my last blog, but it really wasn’t meant to be one. I was inspired by watching a documentary, go figure. It was called After Parkland and it was on Hulu, and like the other documentary, I also cried a lot.

Now, I just wonder what has actually changed since Parkland, and actually I was surprised more than I thought because I only knew about some of it. In Florida (The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act) the sell of firearms was raised to 21, established waiting periods, and background checks. Then the same act also included a program to arm teachers. This is actually worrisome, especially with teachers having firearms, since some of the teachers I had in high school if they had a gun at school they would have used it on a student. While, I’m sure that is not all teachers, seeing some of the teachers be violent to their students on social media, and them having the ability to have a gun personality makes me uneasy.

Then the Federal Government did ban bump stock nationwide, and many other states started their own restrictions on firearms. I don’t want to list them because that would take to long and I really don’t want to type that much, but in case you want to check it out I’m linking it here. However, I do think that there is a lot more to be done on this. For example, in Florida and actually a lot of states don’t require a firearm to be registered, and that is just crazy to me. I feel like that should some type of national or federal gun registration list or database, but for some reason that is illegal, which is nuts to me and needs to be changed.

We just live in this culture of violence and guns, and I always wonder why because they don’t make me feel any safer, but just the opposite. I’ve lived in Japan, a place that doesn’t allow handguns, had very strict weapons laws and I never felt safer than I did there. Yet, there seems to be this belief that safety is the equivalent to having a gun and if history has taught us anything, it’s the opposite. Since Parkland there have been 79 school shootings, and that is not even counting the mass shooting in the US. It’s just very interesting to see that countries with a strict gun and weapons laws don’t have the violence, but we do and we don’t only have no real national laws on firearms, we don’t keep track of them either. Scary isn’t it.

So, why is this being pushed on us? It seems like anytime there is gun violence in the US there is a push to do something about it, and there is always a push back from politicians, and now because of the nonpartisan group Center for Responsive Politics, we know why. I’m going to link the list here. This is an organization that is pretty much-paying politicians for votes, like that seems like it is bribery, and like it should be illegal. This is saying that lives are for sale for the right price and that we don’t matter to them. For Marco Rubio, he got $3 million in exchange for the blood on his hands.

I feel like that was the biggest reason for writing this post, I am mostly just outraged by these politicians who got pretty much paid for ignoring the issues. They care more about their bank accounts than lives, and it’s sad. These are the people who need to be voted out, we shouldn’t have people in public service who are doing this, and I don’t care what side of the political ballpark you are on, I feel like we can all agree here that they shouldn’t be getting what they call donations to vote how someone else wants them to. I would say the same if it and the organization I supported and a politician I liked.

So, how do you feel about politicians who do this, and how do you feel about the firearm laws, do think they should change or not?

i don’t understand the firearm laws in the US so I don’t feel I can really comment – when there was an incident here they brought in a lot of laws to change things and so there aren’t the regular incidents you see in the US. 🙁

I can offer a different perspective while still somewhat going in line with this. I live in Texas. Everyone knows Texans love their guns. I’m no exception to the rule. I NEVER hunt for sport, but I do get a deer or two here and there and process them for food. I honestly don’t shoot for sport, except every great once in a while at a family gathering we will “skeet shoot” with buckshot. I think of it as target practice because I never want an animal to suffer because I missed my killshot. I don’t like handguns due to a childhood incident where one was pulled on my mom in front of me by a family member on drugs, but I know people who conceal carry and I don’t mind it because I know they are properly trained with years of experience and yearly re-certification courses to ensure they know how to use them properly. To each their own, but it’s not my cup of tea.

I will never agree with taking away the accessability of guns. That being said, I believe you should be REQUIRED to undergo more than just a criminal background check to get a firearm. I think one must not only have a minimum saftey course to purchase, but if you have a mental condition, even something common such as anxiety or depression, you should be required to submit a yearly evaluation from your medical provider stating you are in good enough mental health to continue posession of a firearm. I have PTSD and I still believe this should be instituted even though it causes me an inconvenience. And I don’t mean this only to prevent a shooting in terms of innocent people, but this could also potentially save the person who owns the firearm. I am in the statistic of hurting myself or a loved one due to my condition. I know for a fact 110% I would never, ever hurt my child, but there have been times in the distant past I was afraid I would hurt myself and leave her without a mother.

I am in the group that would laugh at someone and close the door if they knocked on my door telling me to hand over my shotgun and rifle, because I also don’t think it’s a firearm issue. I think it’s a morality issue, and somewhere down the line in the last couple of decades people stopped giving a shit about one another. It’s a big soap box topic for me, honestly, so I won’t rant but I think the lack of compassion and empathy for others is the most disgraceful part of humanity.

I’d also like to add that I think it’s amazing you’re brave enough to tackle such a controversial topic online. Right down to mentioning politics.(Of which I agree with your statement that politicians only care for their money) I don’t think politicians truly know or care what is best for those the represent. We are simply a dollar sign that can be manipulated. I have never, and will probably never, align with either of the two major political parties here in the US. They both equally disgust me as a citizen.

I don’t even watch the news anymore. It’s just all depressing.

I really think we need to do something about limiting guns to people who are actually sane. There are way too many misuses of guns these days that it is becoming a huge problem for the innocent. I am not a fan of the organizations who send out lobbyists to protect their agenda. I am for having protection, but not using it for ill intent.

I also feel uneasy when it comes to firearms. To be honest I have never met a person with a firearm that wasn’t a man of law but I would be very uncomfortable to know that someone has a firearm in their home, desk or closet. There are so many ways that people hurt each other, adding one that couldn’t be fought back is not a good decision in my opinion. As for politics, they have their own agenda, they are trying to have more consensus and make happy the people of the firearm industry therefore… there is not all that much to say about them.
