So, sorry I am a day late, but when it came to typing this yesterday my mind was just a blank, so it just wasn’t a good day for typing I guess. The bad part is that I knew what I was going to be writing about, but it is what is. Nest week I will be on schedule, or at least hopefully I will be.

Recently, in my hometown, there has been a rift in the community because of a mural that is hanging in the small town courthouse. Most of the town wants to keep it because they believe it’s history, or so they claim, or they are just kin to the man who painted it. The other much small half wants it to be removed, which is where I stand. Then out of the group who wants it removed someone wants it relocated to a more suitable location, and the other side wants it given back to the family or just gone. I am with the second.

The people who support this mural support the very thing that is supported by that hate group, as it depicts them on it. Showing the courthouse supports that, and get support from the hate group. It shows that they will openly oppress and discriminate against POC, or else why would it be there? They say that getting rid of it will get rid of history, yet it was painted in 2001 when the person who made it knew how much of a hate group that they were and choose to still paint it. Als, history won’t change because a recent picture is gone, but these are the same people who need to read a history book.

It was always a sensitive subject but the community members, I remember when there was a protest at the beginning of this mural’s life and when the hate group came out to support the city and the mural. I remember because it was 2001 and I had previously thought that they were no more because I was either and 8th or 9th grade and that was what I thought that I have learned in school. They made it sounds like they were no longer around, yet that was clearly not the case. The supporters of the mural like to pretend like anyone who has a problem with it just started, even though it had been protested since the start.

So, yesterday all but one of the county’s commissioners voted to remove the mural once they have found a safe place for it to go, because it has to be under temperature control and they want to preserve it. So, most of the community is mad and upset about it, but it gives me a new respect of the commissioners who votes to remove it, to be honest. I’m glad that the community I am in is going to do the right thing for once, even though I don’t care about what happens with the mural at all like I wouldn’t care if it was destroyed, I do think returning it to the family would be really generous though.

So, last weekend we traveled out of state to pick up my little sister who is in college and bring her home because for whatever odd reason they were kicking everyone out for about three weeks. There was just as much social distancing and mask-wearing there as Florida, which is sad. Besides me getting a headache on the first night, it wasn’t too bad. I just don’t like traveling that often because I always seem to get a headache.

So, the shows that the kids got me into, and want to watch fully eventually, the only one I fully watched was Creeped Out. The others are not ones I have watched from the beginning yet, I just watched some of them with the kids and liked and got into them. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, H20: Just Add Water, & Mako Mermaids and what I noticed about both of these is the mermaid I liked the least stay the longest, in H20 the one I liked left after the second season while the one I liked in Mako Mermaids left after the first. Then Tales of Arcadia Trollhunters and 3 Below, then Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.

Some older shows the kids are into were Johnny Test, which I don’t remember liking but I like now, and Ninjago which I got to give the kids spoilers haha. Then I got them into Total Drama and the Orginal Pokemon.

I’m going to leave you with an original song about racism in my hometown by a local artist who sadly because of all the racist in my town is getting a lot of hate. Please leave a positive comment and thumbs up on the song <3 https://youtu.be/MBGICiceGFk

It sounds like they did the right thing removing the mural – it’s good that things are changing but sad when there is opposition to it!

Sounds like removing the mural from what you are saying is the right thing to do if it oppresses and discriminates against POC. And being that it was only painted in 2001, is it really history in the same sense as some of the other things that are being changed? And besides change can be good. We just can’t erase history or we will never learn and keep repeating it.

I’m not sure how historical it can really be if it was from 2001. It sounds like you’re decision to want it removed was likely the right one and I’m glad some of the others in the town agree. It’s awful that your local musician is having to leave because of racism x

I don’t think that a lot of people understand what symbolism certain pieces of art can mean for other groups of people. Nor do I think that they care. If we’re being honest, and as sad as this is to say, art pieces don’t even bother me anymore. I say that it’s sad because, as a woman of color, I’m certain that I should be offended but these things have been presented to us for so long that I’ve become used to seeing them. On the flipside, they mean absolutely nothing to me, even though they have meanings to others and are symbolic of systems and acts of oppression. I just refuse to allow those types of things to have any type of mental power over me, especially when we have so many physical matters to really worry about when it comes to racism in the world. However, I understand the importance of removing such things. If they’re symbolic to people, they fuel the desire to keep oppressive ideas alive.

I am glad that the mural was taken down, it is sad to hear that people are still against these kinds of things. Wishing you a wonderful week darling.

In Russia, the problem of racism is not as acute as in the United States. Politicians are now actively fighting LGBT propaganda and in General with anyone who stands out in any way or wants to change something. As sung in one song: “This is Russia, Russia for the sad, no choice, no change”

Calling a work of art (but considering what we’re talking about, calling it art is kind of a stretch and debatable as well) that dates back to early 2000s “historical” is an excuse to preserve something that didn’t deserve to be – historical is something from early 1900s, or from 1950s-60s at most.
Your hometown did good by removing the mural, it should’ve been done much earlier.

Yay for the mural being taken down.

I’ve been wanting to watch more kid shows for the nostalgia, of course, but I already have so many other things to watch. Ugh. D:

Creations, art and development has always caused dissent. The greatest monuments of nowadays had initially aroused sensation and refusal at the time of their creation, it is the case of Eiffel Tower, that artists of the time considered it a stain on the face of the city of Paris, several castles in Europe that nowadays are seen as great architectural creations, were seen by people of the time as a way to impoverish the population. Only time can show the value of a thing. That being said, we shouldn’t forget that we live in a democratic society and the majority must be respected.
I am sorry to hear about your headache, I believe it is caused by tension and that means that you don’t feel comfortable when traveling. You should associate traveling with the things you enjoy, like seeing a place you have always wanted to see, seeing a friend, a family member, you can listen the music you like while you are on the road or preparing for traveling, watch a movie if you are traveling on an airplane, read the things you enjoy or chat with your dearest friends. Concentrate on the things you enjoy may help you relieve the tension, if that doesn’t work, there are many medicines that may help but that should always be the last resource.

I don’t see how something painted that recently could be considered ‘historical’… That’s obviously grasping at straws in the attempt to preserve something when they have no other reason to keep it around. I am glad that people are standing up and taking a stance against something that is blatantly racist in that regard – we need to speak up when we see hatred in the world! Otherwise, our choice to stay quiet and just accept it makes us no better than those responsible for spreading hate (in my opinion).
