This the second part to What veganism did for me, that post kind of went in its own direction and more of a story than I originally planned, so this is the other benefits that I have got when I became a vegan. I would like to remind that this is only my own personal benefit, and it shouldn’t be taken as medical advice of any kind. I’m not a doctor, dietician or nutritionist, this is just a personal recount of how I personally feel.

I use to get so much heartburn and acid reflex I would get it three to four times a week and would be so bad. While I did give up “two” trigger foods, one of them wasn’t until after I went vegan (diet coke), so that wasn’t a factor, and the other was fatty foods or large meals and I still eat fatty foods and haven’t been trigger by large meals, so that doesn’t even make sense. Also, family who has this problem aren’t people who overeat, so there is no correlation there. I still eat so much spicy foods, black pepper, garlic, onions, citrus, coffee, tea, and tomatoes. Diet coke wasn’t an issue, and I never eat peppermint. So, the only link was that I stopped eating meat, dairy, and other animal byproducts. I’ve heard other vegans say that going vegan made their heartburn and acid reflex worst. So, this might be just a genetic thing, but it’s hard to say since I’m the only vegan in my family, but it’s the only thing that makes sense.

This was never a focus for me, but I lost weight, and what I like is I didn’t necessarily try too, if I wanted to lose more I would have to try, but what I like about this is such a sustainable way of eating in terms of I can do this every day, and I am. I do lose weight slower, but I’m okay with that, I want the changes to be longlasting and losing weight fast is never been good for me or anyone I know.

I learned how to cook because I kind of had to. Before I relied on convenience foods, eating Chef Boyardee out of the can, ramen, and if it was easy it was something I ate for the most part. With eating vegan there is a lot fewer convenience options that aren’t pricey, so they aren’t something that can be depended on, so I was forced to learn how to cook. I never thought before that I would have liked cooking, but I love it.

When I get sick, I get over it a lot fast, in a few days as opposed to a week or more. I’ve seen a lot of people say they don’t get sick anymore, and tbh I’m not sure I buy and it doesn’t see that as realistic. I do sick, but I just seem to get over it faster, and I’m not saying that someone else will have that result because that mostly won’t happen, I can only say that happened to me. Since I’ve been vegan I’ve also had lighter periods, and they have been mostly regular. Every once in awhile they aren’t but they use to be so irregular that I couldn’t even guess when they were coming so, it’s positive for me.

I’ve always been one of those adults with acne, and while I didn’t have it as bad as some people, it was still very embarrassing for me, and one of the perks for eating vegan is that I have much clearer skin, I do still have acne and I actually just got a pimple on my chin, but it happens a lot less often and when it does happen I get fewer spots.

Most of all the biggest thing for me is that I became more creative with food, expanded the foods I ate and that I can make anything I want vegan. I still eat pizza, tacos, etc. 🙂

For November I won’t be blogging, I will be working NaNo.

What is something positive that happened with you?

It’s been a year since I’ve eaten meat. Dairy has been a little more difficult to let go of, even though I don’t consume much of it. I decided to stick to living the pescatarian lifestyle. However, most of my meals are vegan. I have kind of always enjoyed cooking, especially dishes that I like and am particularly good at making. I really do want to get into raw dieting though. I find that it is not only easier to eat this way, but cost efficient also. I hate when my fruits and vegetables go to waste before I’m able to consume them. It makes me feel like I’ve wasted money.

I have considered becoming vegan but have never actually fully made the choice. I will sometimes have vegan dishes but as a Type 2 diabetic I am concerned about how to do it safely. I know it can be done as I know other diabetics who are vegan and usually have a much better control on their blood sugars but our Diabetic health teams here don’t agree with going fully vegan and will not support you on it and I am scared to do it on my own.

I would be worried about that too tbh, I know personally, I eat a very high carb diet and a lot of vegans do, and I know that a diabetic diet is supposed to be low carb. While I see a lot of vegans say they eat high carb and also say that they have diabetes but they also sell things (cookbooks, workout plans, etc) that I wouldn’t trust someone who has a monetary stake in it.
