I have a few stories about working retail that I thought that it would be fun to share. I have complained in general terms before that customers had been why I hated most people, but I never explained it. so, I thought that this would make a fun blog for reading. These are only my experiences in working retail, but knowing and talking with other people who worked retail my experience isn’t much different.

Now, a lot of people seem to think that working in retail is easy and everyone can do it and that we aren’t hard workers. That is so far from the truth that it’s not even funny, while yes I have worked with people who should never work retail ever again, and some of them weren’t hard workers that are not the majority, and most people who come into these stores or establishments see very little of what goes into working this time of job, and they will never get it.

There are so many skills that you need to be able to work retail that most people do not have, like wanting and being able to help others, empathy, patience, being friendly, attention to detail, able to multi-task, sales and communication skills, being able to keep smiling, faking respect to the disrespectful, not reacting to rude and nasty people, and being able to take when some idiot yells at you. You are pretty much going to be a punching bag for customers, when someone is having a bad day, guess who they will take it out on? You. There is also the fact the customer is always right even when they are wrong. You have to be able to work well under pressure, and quick pace.

These are not skills that everyone has, and most people certainly do not possess all of them. I’m not saying these are things people need, but everyone should at least understand them. I would say that working with customers and in retail is most of the time harder than when I was in the Navy.

At the convenience store, and upper management thought that it would a good idea to put a big box of basketballs in all the store, it obviously wasn’t. Especially, a lot of parents don’t seem to pay attention to their children and they can easily get hurt or damage the store. I’m not here to babysit for those people anyway, especially when I didn’t get paid enough to do what I am already doing. So, obviously a lot of kids came in and played with the basketballs, which isn’t a problem until they are hitting each other with it or throwing it across the store, and while some parents are good at being parents most aren’t and either expect me to do it for them or let their children be horrible.

One day I was working by myself and a women came into mess up the restroom, because most people don’t seem to understand what a trashcan is for, and she let her children run around the store and throw basketballs at the displays and each other. She was a bad parent, so when I told them not to throw the basketballs, she actually got mad at me for doing what she was supposed to do and defended her children. So, she is delusional as well. I tried to explain that it was a lawsuit waiting to happen, but I actually said it a lot nicer and politer than that, but she said that wasn’t the case that the store could never be sued. Obviously, she was not only a bad parent but bad at her job and should reconsider having both of those things.

We had this older guy who came in every morning was always rude for no reason, but to be honest he was my dad’s age but he looked like he was 50 years older. He would get mad that one of the managers was parking in the employee parking lot, and he would call it the handicap spot but refuse to actually park in the actual handicap. He would come in and yell at us for it, be insulting, rude, and threating. He threatened me more than once and thought it was okay because he was old, and that what his sons who are in their 40’s said to justify his bad behavior, so they are all clearly entitled as fuck.

Then after he was done threaten me and my co-worker he went and lied to the manager about what happened to get us fired, sucks for him because our cameras have audio and video and it showed him being a fucking lying sack of shit. Then his sons came into justify his bad behavior and lie some more. All because he didn’t get to park in the employee parking a lot. Pretty sad.

One day, I had just clocked out and the new female co-worker was at the register and she had been there long enough to deal with the most problems but still pretty new, but she had mine and the manager’s numbers if something went wrong. I was fixing to leave when a woman I went to high school came in and immediately started being rude to her, and I am 100% sure it was because the new co-worker was black which sadly a lot of people in my town had a problem with. So, the women who I know was educated because she graduated with me, told the co-worker something wrong and I can’t really explain it because it would give away where I worked.

I think she was purposely saying the wrong things to confuse the new co-worker so she could complain about her. So, the assistant manager stepped in and told the women not to step to her like that and that we weren’t mind readers that she had to know what she wanted. The women got bad threw her id at my co-worker than yelled and cursed at her, which was unexpectable. I was already off the clock but I told the co-work to hand me her ID and not to turn on the pump and I walked outside to the pump I handed the ID back to the woman and told her to leave before I called the cops, then she tried to cuss at me, and I just repeated myself before going inside.

The sad part is I should have stepped in soon, but it does suck a customer can easily lie and get us fired, and this was before we got audio. I was just shocked at what was going on, and I really shouldn’t be but it seems like I can know my town is racist as fuck, but I don’t actually expect it to happen. That and it seems like everything in retail happens so much faster than the rest of life for some reason.

The restrooms were a big reason why I hated customers was because of the restrooms, I could clean them until my hands bleed and it would stop people from trashing them. This one time in particular I was fixing to get off the clock and just came out of the restroom and straighten it up and a woman went in there behind me and then came out and talked about how they were trashed. Before I went in my co-worker checked both restrooms for their own reinsurance, and I mentioned that it was odd because I went it right before her and they were fine, and my co-worker said it must have been her. She didn’t like that and left. I went to check the restroom and this nasty bitch threw all her toilet paper all over the floor. Sad that she trashed the restroom and wanted to blame everyone but herself. So gross.

Another restroom incident was when someone was using it they threw up everywhere, which isn’t a problem if you tell someone about it so we can clean it up. I get it shit happens, but I can’t clean something if I don’t know it’s there. So, this person didn’t tell anyone and just left. So, while I was stocking the side coolers someone told me about it. Obviously, I stopped stocking and went to cleaning. There is no reason not to tell someone about this either.

There was that one day that I worked a double and was extremely tried because of it, and obviously I was reacting to things in general slowly, so when an elderly trucker couple came up and said because I was tried looking and young looking that I was stupid, and so I was like excuse you? They came to that conclusion because there is computers now that kids don’t learn anymore, which makes no sense because they thought that I was either still in high school or just out, and my little sister that is still in high school and she was learning things in elementary school that I learned in high school, education has only become more advance so they are seriously stupid and just hate young people. They just assumed so much about me and didn’t like that I called them out on out on it. It’s sad because customers can insult you because they are just bad people and get away with it.

There is more stories but at this point I feel like I am rabbling, and there is so many times that the samething happens over and over like getting yelled at for IDing people, for doing my job, for being a woman, etc. Hope you all enjoyed lol.

Oh gosh I am honestly so damn glad I don’t work in retail anymore! I did a post similar to this a while back with my own awful experiences and my gosh people can just be so rude for no reason a lot of the time!
There were some days where I absolutely loved my job and it’s a great feeling making someone smile and giving them great service but it’s the worst when you’re made to feel like the smallest person ever for simply just doing your job. I’ve had people comment on my appearance in very uncomfortable ways (negatively and positively), telling me if they were my mother they wouldn’t allow me to have tattoos and saying I’d look vile in a wedding dress. Had an old man at least 60 also come into my place of work with his wife once and start taking photos of me and saying he was going to upload them to Facebook and tell everyone I was his new girlfriend. Believe it or not, his wife got angry at ME for it… For literally standing there and saying please don’t. Also had another gentleman try and tell me what the offers on in our store were and basically implied that I was stupid because HE didn’t understand that 3 for 2 isn’t the same thing as buy one get one half price… He stood and argued with me for 5 minutes trying to prove his point. People are WEIRD.

It’s so funny I came across your blog the other day, started reading your blog post and had to close it before I finished. Found it again today, started reading and again had to close out before finishing then tried to find it again and couldn’t and then got a notification you had commented on mine 🙂

I love your stories about working in retail. I once did a blog post about funny call center conversations I had but I have no search feature on my blog and can’t find it now haha. My husband works in retail and sometimes comes home with really funny stories. I’m so glad I don’t work in retail myself anymore.

Oh god! SO many experiences! I have a few awful stories from when I worked in retail too. I don’t know what it is that makes people so awful to staff for the most basic things! When I worked in Topshop, a woman asked me if we had an item in alternative sizes. It was during sale time and the item had been placed in an area it shouldn’t have been. She threw the top at me and stormed off yelling at me when I told her I’d have to check with a colleague who was working that department…x

I hate it when customers start acting up, especially when the situation is out of the employee’s hands and needs to be escalated or something. I give such respect for retail employees who go through so much. What is with parents who can’t control their kid and let them be disrespectful? That is such a bad example. People can be very gross. Thanks for sharing these interesting stories.

I’ve worked in retail for over 10 years, mostly in sales environments, so I definitely understand a lot of the struggles.

Don’t get me started on the parents who let their kids make a ruckus. When I used to work in Target, I asked a kid not to run, and his Mom went all “soccer Mom” on me and told me not to scream at her kid, when I didn’t even scream, I asked. 5 minutes later, her kid had fallen and hurt himself, and she was searching for a manager to blame.

You know that they would never leave the bathrooms this way in their own homes, but they have the nerve to leave the bathrooms a mess. It’s not that hard to throw your trash away, not pee on the toilet seat, or flush the toilets. I’ve had to clean actual feces off the walls – and I don’t even want to know how and why.
